  1. Amanda says:

    Wilford Brimley

  2. Marianne says:

I agree with Amanda – Wilford Brimley not only looks like William Dean Howells – he would have the voice and mannerisms down pat.

  3. steve mayer says:

  4. Jane Byrd says:

Christopher Plummer. Looks like him. And he can do anything.

  5. Tammy Paladini says:

I was thinking of Wilford Brimley but what about Robert Duvall…with some help I think he would be great….:)

  6. Jenn says:

    Most def. Wilford Brimley.

  7. wendy says:

Robert Duvall. Wilford Brimley looks a little like him, but don’t seen right for the part. My daughter thinks Richard Vernon-Harry Potter’s uncle Vernon.

  8. Jorge Gonzalez says:

I DEFINENTLY agree with the idea of Wilford Brimley.

  9. Logan says:

Depending on the film budget, Anthony Hopkins would be lovely here.

  10. Karisma Wintak says:

    Dabney Coleman

  11. Florence says:

I love the idea of Christopher Plummer. He is very statesmanlike. Also Robert Duvall can do anything, although I somehow see Duvall in one of the folksier more emotional roles. I’m a fan.

  12. Diana Schreer says:

Just looking at the picture made me think of Philip Seymour Hoffman. He’s certainly a good actor. Robert Duvall would be a wonderful choice for a role, of course! And I’m a big fan of Wilford Brimley…love to see him, any time!

  13. Dorothea Kleffel says:

look at Armin Mueller-Stahl – he looks like William Dean Howells and he is a fantastic actor

  14. Andy B says:

Robert Duvall, Brian Cox, or (and some might hate this, or love it) Robert DeNiro. Here’s why, Brimley’s too old, I think Dennehy pulled a Gene Hackman (and HE WOULD BE CHOICE, if you could get him out of retirement…), PSH is talented, but this role needs a seasoned vet, Dreyfuss, possibly. Spacey, no. Hopkins, no. Dabney Coleman? No.

  15. jan says:

Wilford Brimley came to mind first and I have always liked the works of Sam Shepard. Also, Barry Corbin has the right attitude.

  16. Tim Drysdale says:

    Robert Duval

  17. Wendy Ciarci says:

I like the idea of Armin Mueler-Stahl or Robert Duval but I would also look at character actors like James Cromwell or David Strathairn. Character actors can transform themselves and it is the acting rather than the appearance I think. The key roles are more important to the appearance.

  18. Doris Temme says:

    Tom Berenger

  19. Bob Hicks says:

I also thought immediately of Christopher Plummer and agree with Jane Byrd. He would be an excellent choice.

  20. Chermai says:

Ed Asner came to mind first, due to appearance, but Christopher Plummer would be brilliant. I like Robert Loggia too.

  21. Tina says:

    William Devane

  22. Susan Trumble says:

    Richard Dreyfus

  23. Again, I have to recommend my husband, John Ben Sutter. John Ben looks like the gentleman, has experience as an actor and a man of letters. He is a political science professor with acting credits. Why not take a look at him? He is an unknown and would be easier to get to fit your budget than the above suggestions. He is the right age and has the correct bearing.

  24. michelle says:

I agree that Robert Duval would excel in this role

  25. Bill says:

    Ed Asner

  26. Philip says:

    Robert Duvall

  27. Klaus-Hendrik Herr says:

    Armin Mueller-Stahl!!
German actor and artist, Hollywood career.

    The looks.
Would give the film some international shine (Germany is largest non-english Christian Science community)

  28. Armin Müller Stahl says:

Hi, i suggest Armin Müller Stahl, a famous german actor who played a few times in american productions.
He looks like a twin to Howells and is a great character actor.
    Greetings from Switzerland, Margrit

  29. Cassandra says:

    Armin Mueller-Stahl

  30. Clopin says:

    Agreed. Armin Mueller-Stahl.

  31. Richard Dayton, Ohio says:

I have a high school friend that is a professional stage actor living north of San Francisco, in the Mill Valley area. His name is Stephen Klum. He has many years of stage acting-would probably be interested if approached in at least reading for several of the parts of this movie.

  32. Page says:

I agree with one person that had mentioned Richard Dreyfus. I believe that he could pull off anything. He’s a great character actor!

  33. Armin Mueller-Stahl is very competent for literature films

  34. Lynne says:

I agree with others that Christopher Plummer would do a good job in this role… or Robert Duvall. I think Duvall could play any part in this film and do it justice.

  35. April Dawn says:

Maybe Kevin Spacey, because I feel that the more comradery this character has on and off screen will help keep the storyline strong.
    Best Wishes.

  36. Teresa Tromp says:

Robert Duvall immediately came to mind. He is a great character actor.

I live near the Mark Twain House in Hartford, CT, and have visited the mansion. It is very ornate.

  37. Michele Wood says:

    Anthony Hopkins

  38. Alan says:

Anthony Hopkins. Others say Wilford Brimley, but he is just not a good enough actor on the same level as Mr. Hopkins.

  39. DanDee says:

    of course RICHARD DREYFUSS!

  40. Alicia says:

Robert Duvall would be ideal for the role.

  41. Lola Riojas says:

    Sir Ian Holm

  42. Christopher Peckham says:

My William Dean Howells readings would go to :
    Wilford Brimley,
    Christopher Plummer, and
    Sir Tom Courtenay

  43. Michelle says:

    Wilford Brimley

  44. Kim says:

I think Christopher Plummer would bring something to this role

  45. Shirley Schoenherr Carey says:

    Ed Asner or Robert Duvall

  46. ravenheart says:

jeff bridges….hands down..he would be perfect to offset vals character.

  47. Liz says:

I agree with earlier posts suggesting Richard Dreyfuss in this role and another possibility for a good fit could be Ed Harris.
